Abstract
Abstract: The irradiation of 2-chloro-or 2-bromo-l, 3-diphenylindenyl anion (5b or 4b) causes dehalogenation to yield a hypovalent intermediate best described as 1, 3- diphenylisoindenyIidene (1) or 1, 3-diphenyl-1, 2-dehydroindene (20). This intermediate undergoes facile CH insertion, addition to electron-rich olefins, and halide interchange.
