Abstract

It has been established that l-methyl-4-(a-cyanobenzyl)-1, 4-dihydroquinoline is produced from the condensation of 1-methylquinolinium iodide with phenylacetonitrile in the presence of base. The position of attachment of the phenylacetonitrile moiety was determined by conversion of the cyano product to the corresponding amide, followed by reduction in two stages to a substituted decahydroquinoline.
