Abstract Stable carbenes derived from thiazole, 1H-imidazole, and 4H-1, 2, 4-triazole are efficient catalysts for benzointype condensations of formaldehyde. Catalysts derived from N- substituted thiazolium salts trimerize formaldehyde to dihydroxyacetone (II).
