Abstract

Addition of hypochlorous acid to isobutene in water gives mainly l-chloro-2-methylpropan-2- ol; the chief olefinic by-product is 3-chloro-2-methylpropene. The latter olefin is also the predominant by-product in the hydrolysis in water of 1: 2-dichloro-2-methylpropane.
