Abstract

The reaction product of 3, 3′-dimethyl-2, 2′ 4, 4′ 6, 6′-hexanitrobiphenyl (I) with a mixture of dichromate, nitric acid and sulfuric acid is shown from its IR and UV spectra and by independent synthesis to be dipicric acid (3, 3′-dihydroxy-2, 2′, 4, 4′, 6, 6′- hexanitrobiphenyl, III) rather than the 3, 3′-dicarboxy-derivative (II) as had been suggested by earlier workers. 3-Hydroxy-2, 2′, 4, 4′ 6, 6′-hexanitrobiphenyl (VI), a low-yield by- ...
