Abstract

Following our work on the preparation of N-vinylpyridiniums by dehydration of N-(2- hydroxyethyl)-pyridiniums, l we studied the base-catalyzed isomerization of N- allylpyridiniums. Not only did the isomerization succeed, but we also found that N- vinylpyridinium hydroxides undergo a remakable series of further transformations, which we have now elucidated.
