Abstract

The nitronate ion is an “ambident anion” 3 and may react with reagents such as alkyl halides at one of the oxygens of the nitro group (0-alkylation) or at the carbon attached to the nitro group (C-alkylation). Numerous workers have investigated the reactions of nitroparaffin salts with such alkylating agents as alkyl halide^,^ alkyl sulfates, 6v6 diazomethane, jS6 benzyltrimethylarnmonium iodides7 and various other onium salts8
