Abstract: Oxidative substitution of methylarenes by iron (II1) complexes proceeds via initial electron transfer to afford benzylic products in excellent yields. The growth and decay of the cation radical ArCH,'.(as the prime transient intermediate) are observed directly by its ESR spectrum. The stoichiometric requirement of two Fe (111) is established for various methylarenes ArCH,. The rate-limiting electron-transfer process [ArCH3+ Fe (II1) 9 ArCH,'. ...
