Abstract

When mesityl oxide is added to benzene in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride, condensation takes place with the formation of a ketone C12H160. It is likely that the hydrogen chloride addition product of mesityl oxide is formed first and then reacts with the aluminum chloride setting free hydrogen chloride. Thus a trace of hydrogen chloride catalyzes the reaction and an evolution of the free gas takes place only at the very end.
