Abstract: Neat dimethylaminomalononitrile (1) decomposes at ambient temperature to give the very persistent dimethylaminodicyanomethyl radical (5). The g value and the hyperfine splitting constants, determined by computer simulation of the ESR spectrum, are consistent with this structure.
