Abstract

Monosubstituted ketene acetals (11,111 and IV), when added to a solution of bromine, yield the corresponding bromoesters md alkyl halides (reaction 1). A reverse order of mixing of the reactants causes I1 and I11 to follow reaction 2 to a largc mtent; the resulting ybromo-p, p-dialkoxyesters (X and XI) are readily converted by pyrolysis to the tetronic acid enol ethers (XI1 and XIII).
