To exert their effects on cell differentiation and proliferation, the retinoid all-trans-retinoic acid (trans-FtA, 2) binds to the retinoic acid receptors (RARs) and its 94s isomer (g-cis-RA, 1) binds to both the RARs and the retinoid X receptors (RXRs).
