Abstract

Summary X convenient procedure for the preparation of the 2-nitro derivative of a-phenyl-P- nitroethyl nitrate has been found in the condensation of o-nitrobenzaldehyde with nitromethane in the presence of triethylamine, and nitration of the total reaction mixture. The 2, 4-dinitro derivative has been prepared by a similar process. The nitrate esters probably are too labile to merit consideration as explosives.
