Abstract An enzyme has been found in different species of isoquinoline alkaloid-producing plant cell cultures which specifically N-methylates certain (S)-tetrahydroprotoberberine alkaloids such as (S)-canadine and (S)-stylopine at the expense of S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAM).
