Treating the quaternary salt III with a warm solution of potassium carbonate eliminated one formyl residue with the formation of two isomeric dimethylamino derivatives, VI and VII. The aldehyde VI was characterised as picrate and found identical with a substance we prepared earlier2, The ketone VII has also been prepared by us through a different route3.
