Abstract

Friedel-Crafts acetylation of azulene has been shown to give 1-acetylazulene and a diacetylazulene. The structure of the 1-acetylazulene was established by conversion to methyl 1-azuloate. 1-Nitroazulene has been obtained from the treatment of azulene with cupric nitrate and acetic anhydride and reaction of the hydrocarbon with benzenediazonium chloride has been shown to give 1-azuleneazobenzene.
