Exhaustive approaches to the synthesis of racemic γ-heterosubstituted γ-methyl-α, β- butenolides are presented, starting mainly from C3 synthons (glyceraldehyde, glycidaldehyde, acrolein and 2, 3-epoxypropyl ethers).
