Summary 1. Azo dyes formed by coupling diazotized aromatic amines with m- hydroxyphenylacetic acid have been found to cyclize to 2-aryl-substituted cinnolines under acetylating conditions. 2. This new synthesis of cinnoline derivatives has been used to prepare heterocyclic analogs of the steroid hormones.
