Abstract

R'+ CHa:: CHX+ R: CHa: CHX'---t R (CH&HX) DCHzCHX'The nature of various processes which might initiate such a chain reaction has been a matter of considerable~ peculation. 2~~ Schulz and Wittig have shown, however, that the free radicals formed from dissociation of tetraphenylsu~ cinonitrile~ or froin the decomposition of benzene azotriphenylmethane (CsH5N= NC (CaH~)@ are capable of catalyzing the polymerization of styrene.
