Abstract

good yield. The conversion of carboxylic acids to amides via HMPA has been previously reported5 in the literature. This experiment did, however, point out that acid amides were not suitable activating groups for such a reaction. Diary1 ketones, aryl alkyl ketones, and aromatic aldehydes (entries 1-n, Table I) were found to be unsuitable substrates for this reaction, and in these cases a complex mixture of products was formed.
