Abstract

The nitration of a series of the titled pentamethylbenzene derivatives has been investigated in order to know the orienting effect of substituent groups for the side-chain nitrooxylation. The nitrooxylation was found to occur almost exclusively at the methyl groups adjacent to the electron-withdrawing substituents (NO 2, COOH, and COOCH 3), while with the compounds containing electron-donating groups (OH and OCH 3) the main reaction led to the ...
