Abstract

The presence of the alicyclic ring in indan has been shown by a physical method to cause no significant bond fixation of the type proposed by Mills and Nixon. This conclusion results from infrared observations of the reduction in the C= O vibrational frequency arising from conjugated chelation of adjacent hydroxyl and carbonyl-containing groups.
