Abstract

1, 2-Diarylethenes are readily oxidized to corresponding 1, 2-diarylethanediones by boiling in a mixture of sulfuric and acetic acids with addition of bromine, iodine, or hydrohalic acids and their salts. The first oxidation stage involves electrophilic addition of a halogen at the double bond. 1, 2-Diaryl-1, 2-dibromoethanes are oxidized to corresponding 1, 2- diarylethanediones in the presence of the same compounds, as well as of sodium sulfite.
