Abstract

The acid-catalyzed reactions of 0-, m-, and p-cymene with isobutylene, diisobutylene, and triisobutylene give complex mixtures of hydrocarbon products. o-Cymene forms only alkylation products, whereas p-cymene gives predominantly cyclialkylation products, with only one case of alkylation. m-Cymene occupies an intermediate position, providing both alkylation and cyclialkylation products.
