Abstract

Vilsmeier and Haack'discovered that secondary and tertiary aromatic amines can be converted into aldehydo derivatives by the action of N-methylformanilide and phosphorus oxychloride, a reaction reminiscent of the Bischler-Napieralski synthesis of isoquinolines.
