Abstract

In the presence of sodium amide, carboxylic esters having a-hydrogen generally exhibit two types of reaction.'One type involves the reaction of the base with the carbonyl carbon of the ester to form the corresponding amide, while the other consists in the removal of the a- hydrogen of the ester to form the ester anion, which is the reactive intermediate in certain ester condensations.
