1-( j3-Naphthoy1)-fluorene was the chief product of the reaction of 14.5 g. of fluorene-1-carboxylic acid chloride with 9 g. of naphthalene, and 9.2 g. of aluminum chloride in 300 cc. of tetrachloroethane, the mixture being initially at 5-10', then at room temperature.
