762 G. Roma, A. Ermili and M. Mazzei Vol. 13 corresponding 9-substituted 12-oxo-12ff-naphtho [l',2':- 5,6]pyrano[2,3-cf]pyrimidines (V), as shown in the fol- lowing reaction pattern (Chart I). The peculiar mesomeric form of 7-pyrone ring, illus- trated in the presumable intermediate IV, may explain Lhe easy splitting of the 3-dimethylamino group, as previously reported (11).
