Abstract: Alkyl 4-nitrophenyl sulfides and sulfoxides undergo a self-photoinduced, singlet oxygen oxidation to produce a variety of products, including sulfonates and carbonyl compounds formed by the oxidative cleavage of the CS bond of the sulfides and sulfoxides.
