In connection with the specific chemical fragmentation of peptides and proteins, the conditions for the cleavage of dehydroalanine residues, which can be formed from cysteine and serine residues, was investigated. Dehydroalanine residues are cleaved hydrolytically at the SC, bond with nearly quantitative yield by heating the compound to 100'at pH 2 for 1 hr.
