8 8 posure of hydroxyfuranones 3 (R= Et) to hydrazine hydrate yielded either a mixture of phthalazinone 4 and pyrazolinone 5 or exclusively 5 depending on R1 and RP When R1= Rz= H or R1= H and R2= CH3, both products were obtained with the ratio of phthalazinone to pyrazolone increasing from 1: l to 1.51.
