The possibility of forming simple energetic ionic liquids via the straightforward protonation of heterocyclic amines with nitric or picric acid was explored with 1-alkylimidazoles, 1-alkyl-2- methylimidazoles, and nitro, dinitro, and dicyano-substituted derivatives.
