Summary When a saturated hydrocarbon is treated with certain polyhaloalkanes in the presence of a catalytic amount of a decomposing organic peroxide, hydrogen-halogen exchange occurs and the hydrocarbon is converted to a monohaloalkane. Straight chain paraffins of at least three carbon atoms as well as branched chain and cyclic hydrocarbons may be used.
