Abstract Trifluoroacetaldehyde hydrazones are condensed with glyoxals to give 4-hydroxy-3- trifluoromethylpyrazoles, the reaction offering a novel route to 4-hydroxypyrazoles carrying trifluoromethyl group. The 4-hydroxyl group was easily converted to its derivatives by the reaction with various electrophiles.
