摘要

We esterified higher alcohols with monochloroacetic acid (IV) by heating the components in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. Because of the strong activation of the halogen in esters III by the alkoxycarbonyl group alkylation of trimethylamine proceeds readily over several hours at room temperature even in a relatively nonpolar solvent such as benzene.
