Abstract Approaches to water-soluble phosphines are described which involve conversion of ethylene glycol derivatives and sugar diacetonides into monoallyl ethers, and hydrophosphorylation of the latter. In the case of the sugars, water-solubility is conferred by a subsequent hydrolysis.
