Bromination of 1-(tert-butylamine)-2-nitro-1-butene (3) in the presence of pyridine gave a mixture which, based on NMR analysis, consisted of N-(Z-bromo-2-nitrobutylidene)-tert- butylamine (4), 1-bromo-1-nitropropane (5), and a compound believed to be 2-bromo-2- nitrobutanal (6)(eq 3).
