摘要

The kinetics of the mercury (I1)-promoted hydrolyses of acyclic 0, s-acetals of benzaldehyde have been measured to establish that (i) mercury (I1) is a reagent, not a catalyst, in the hydrolysis reaction,(ii) the rate-limiting step can be any of the three steps in Scheme I (khemi, k,,, or kacetal), depending on the concentration of mercury (I1) relative to the acid, and (iii) the state of complexation of mercury (I1) is critical to its reactivity.
