ortho-Mercaptobenzoic acid and ortho-mercaptophenols were discovered as efficient thiol catalysts of both the intramolecular Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) and Rauhut–Currier (RC) reaction. High reaction rates were achieved under mildly basic, aqueous conditions.
