We report a new synthesis of 3-nitroveratrole, based on the directed lithiation of veratrole, and photochemical substitutions of both 3-nitroveratrole and o-nitroanisole with several nucleophiles. Both aromatic substrates undergo photocyanation meta to the nitro group.
