A mixture of 16 g. (0.11 mole) of sodium benzoate in 40 ml. of water was made slightly acid to litmus with 10% hydrochloric acid and then 200 ml. of ethylene glycol was added, together with 20.5 g. (0.1 mole) of 2-bromoacetyl- thiophene.
