Abstract: Chemical and electrochemical reduction of dianthryl compounds affords mono-, di-, tri-, and tetraanions via successive electron-transfer processes. The diamagnetic or paramagnetic ions are characterized by NMR and ESR spectroscopy, respectively, by cyclic voltammetry, and by quenching reactions.
