4-Phenyl-lH-2, 3-benzoxazine, which is the first example of this type of compound having no substituent at the 1 position, w&s synthesized in four convenient steps from N, N- dimethylbenzylamine and beneonitrile. The final step, which involves cyclization of the lithio salt of a methiodide oxime, is presumably made possible by isomerization of the cis oxime salt to its trans isomer.
