Quinonoid mesoionic compounds having a 2, 3-diphenyltetrazolium ring were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. Compounds possessing an inserted benzene ring were found that a dipolar (5-tetrazolylio) phenolate structure contributes importantly to the ground state of the mesoions.
