The reaction of terminal acetylenes with 1, 3-butadienes catalyzed by (η 4-1, 5- cyclooctadiene)(η 6-1, 3, 5-cyclooctatriene) ruthenium [Ru 0 (COD)(COT)]–PR 3 (R= ethyl, butyl, octyl) in various solvents at 80° C afforded linear codimers in good to excellent yield with high chemo-, regio-, and stereoselectivities. Reactions of deuterated acetylenes were also examined.
