(I), Johnson and Brautlecht have described the action of nitric acid on the hydantoin of phenylalanine (11). They observed that this compound is attacked by nitric acid in the para position of the benzene ring with formation of 4-paranitrobenzylhydantoin (111). In this paper we shall describe the behavior of nitric acid towards anisylhydantoin (VI) and anisalhydantoin2 (IV).
