The electronic properties of newly synthesized N3-dye-related heteroleptic ruthenium (II) complexes 3a− 3e are tuned by remote substituent X to finely control the performance of DSSCs using the dyes; the highest energy conversion efficiency, 8.3%, has been achieved with the device using 3d (X= OMe).
