Abstract Iodoalkenes give symmetrical couplings to dienes with complete retention of configuration when treated with organolithium reagents in the presence of catalytic amounts of manganese (II) salts. A catalytic cycle is proposed through lithium manganate derivatives and manganese (IV) derivatives.
