The protection of the carbonyl group of 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-l-phenylphosphorinan-4-one as the ethylene ketal, reductive removal of the 1-phenyl substituent with lithium metal in THF, and subsequent removal of the protecting group followed by hydride reduction gave 5.
