Initially obtained product mixtures exhibited complex NMR spectra, as a total of four superimposed spectra resulted from the two newly formed diastereomers, each existing as a syn/anti mixture of amides (the syn and anti isomers for a given diastereomer derived from 4a only differed by separate N-methyl resonances).
